How a presidential mandate ends before the term is up
Resignation+
The president submits a written resignation to the Speaker of the National Assembly and informs the public at the same time. The mandate ends on the day the resignation is submitted. Nothing has to be noted, confirmed or accepted, and no one has to wait.
The Speaker of the National Assembly then takes over the duties of the president and calls the election. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why the entire calendar in this tool hangs on a single date.
Removal from office+
The procedure is started in the National Assembly on the proposal of at least one third of MPs. The Constitutional Court has 45 days to decide whether the constitution was violated. Removal is then adopted by at least two thirds of all MPs.
Because of the 45 days at the Constitutional Court, and because it needs a two-thirds majority, this route has never been used.
How the dates are counted. In calendar days, exactly as in the law. Deadlines do not move when they fall on a weekend or a holiday, because the law does not provide for that. For deadlines that run backwards from the voting day, the tool shows the last full day on which the act can still be done, so where the law says "no later than 20 days before the day of voting" the tool shows the 21st day.
What the tool does not do. It does not suggest a date and it does not predict one. It shows what the law allows and what it rules out. The full list of deadlines for a called election is in the election calendar; this tool carries only the ones that decide the shape of the window.
